Snæfellsnes National Park
Main Sights: – Snæfellsjökull volcano glacier – Gerðuberg basalt columns – Bird cliffs at Arnarstapi – Kirkjufell church-shaped mountain with Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall This Snaefellsnes Peninsula Tour takes you on a fascinating journey; culminating right about the halfway point at the mighty 1.450 meter Snæfellsjökull volcano glacier where we visit the national park. Jules Verne made it famous in his novel “Journey to the Center of the Earth”. The journey begins by taking the 6 km long underwater tunnel – crossing under Hvalfjörður – the Whale bay fjord. Afterwards we travel along the peninsula where we have the sesaside on our left and incredible scenery and mountains on our right. This area became famous in the movie The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013). We stop at the unique Breiðafjörður beach, one of the few beaches in Iceland that do not consist of black sand, which is why it’s called ‘the golden beach’. Along the way we visit small towns and fishing villages, see spectacular bird cliffs by the sea at Dritvík and stop at the fishing hamlets at Arnarstapi and Hellnar. In the northern side we also stop by picturesque church-shaped mountain Kirkjufell which is accompanied by wonderful little waterfall on the other side of the road. At Djúpalónssandur beach (not be accessible in winter) we will allow those who feel up to it to try strength with the Stones of Trial.
The Snæfellsnes Luxury SUV tour will take you to visit Ólafsvík, Iceland‘s oldest trading town which dates back to 1687, and Stykkishólmur, which sits on a promontory overlooking the beautiful Breiðarfjörður Bay. You will get a chance to try the excellent blue mussel at a local restaurant. The tour continues to Snæfellsjökull glacier for breathtaking views over the peninsula. The area is also known for being populated by mythological creatures such as elves and trolls. Your guide will show you where those magical beings are said to live. It said the glacier has mystical powers and that it is the gateway to another world. There is no doubt that the scenery is tremendously inspiring. Exploring the area in a SuperJeep makes the whole experience unforgettable. The Wonders of Snæfellsnes
The Snæfellsnes peninsula in the west of Iceland is almost like a miniature version of the whole country. In addition to its emblematic Snæfellsjökull glacier, you will find white and black sand beaches, bird cliffs, spectacular mountains and volcanic craters, incredibly rich trout lakes and salmon rivers, lush valleys, and unique harbours in charming fishing villages. The stunning landscapes of the peninsula have captured the imagination of people all over the world ever since Jules Verne wrote the famous science fiction novel “Journey to the Centre of the Earth” in which the amazing Snæfellsjökull glacier is where the journey begins. Snæfellsnes continues to inspire great works of art to this day, most recently when Ben Stiller filmed parts of his critically acclaimed blockbuster “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” there, notably in the charming village of Stykkishólmur, through which the tour will take you. Tour duration: 08:00 – 20:30.
