In an Icelandic environment, hospitality is not only a noble gesture
- it is a necessity and an important part of safe travel.

The South Coast – in a minibus

This tour covers a variety of rivers, waterfalls, mountains and glaciers along Iceland’s southern coast. As you work your way east from Reykjavík, Route 1 (the Ring Road) emerges into austere volcanic foothills punctuated by surreal steam vents, around Hveragerði, then swoops through a flat, wide coastal plain, full of verdant horse farms and greenhouses, before the landscape suddenly begins to grow wonderfully jagged, after Hella and Hvolsvöllur. Mountains thrust upwards on the inland side, some of them volcanoes wreathed by mist (Eyjafjallajökull, site of the 2010 eruption), and the first of the awesome glaciers appears, as enormous rivers such as the Þjórsá cut their way to the black-sand beaches rimming the Atlantic. The majestic Seljalandsfoss is the first stop on of the day, a waterfall where it’s possible to walk behind, a very unique experience in itself. From Seljalandsfoss we keep heading east along the south coast making our way towards the black volcanic beach of Reynisfjara. Vík is a village on the black sandy beach of the south coast and an excellent lunch stop. From Vík we start to head back to the city with a few interesting stops on the way. The first is by the roots of Sólheimsjökull glacier. Sólheimajökull is an outlet-glacier from Mýrdalsjökull-glacier, the 4th largest in Iceland. Outlet glaciers are channels of ice that flow out of ice sheets, ice caps or icefields, but are constrained on the sides with exposed bedrock. Sólheimajökull is a textbook example of this but because of the warmer climate, the glacier has been receding dramatically for the past decade. We walk from the parking lot to the edge of the glacier so please bring your good, solid shoes on this tour. On the way to Reykjavík from Sólheimajökull glacier, we stop by the magnificent Skógafoss waterfall and hear about its hidden treasure reflecting in the rainbow before calling it a day. Around Iceland’s professional guides have extensive experience of the region. They will share not only the must see sites but local knowledge, great stories and personal recommendations. The BCU 4 Star Leader has the skills and judgement to select appropriate environments for paddlers with a range of experience. The BCU 4 Star Leader Award is a leadership award and not a coaching award. What does that mean in English? Simply that we only employ the best sea kayak guides you can find. What is kayaking? Our sea kayaks are the best open water kayaks available. They are closed boats so no water gets into them (they are not canoes). You glide peacefully through the water, powered by your paddle strokes. You will be wearing a lifejacket; a specially made dry jacket and wet pants that will keep you warm even in the harshest off circumstances. Almost anyone can go on a kayak tour with us in Iceland.
