The Golden Circle tour covers some of the most popular highlights of Iceland. Þingvellir national park, Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir geothermal hot-spring and Kerið Volcanic Crater. Kerið is a volcanic crater lake located in the Grímsnes area in south Iceland. In the Geysir geothermal area we get the chance to observe the boiling hot spring Strokkur spout steaming water up to 30 meters into the air every 8 minutes.
The iconic waterfall of Gullfoss, or Golden Falls, is only a 7 minutes’ drive from Geysir – located in the glacial river Hvítá which originates in Langjökull glacier, the second largest in Iceland. Its elegant and majestic form is like no other, where the torrential river water plummets in two steps down into a 32 meters deep canyon carved out by the glacia-river for thousands of years.
Þingvellir National Park is not only a site of geological wonders, located in between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, but also a place charged with history, as the site of the national parliament since 930. The Alþingi (assembly) at Þingvellir was Iceland’s supreme legislative and judicial authority from its establishment until 1271.
In the final decades of the Commonwealth, there were clashes between chieftain families, which resulted in Iceland coming under the Norwegian crown. Executive power was strengthened under this new order, while legislative and judicial authority at first remained in the hands of the Alþingi, but was gradually transferred to the Norwegian and later the Danish rulers, until in 1662, the King of Denmark became the absolute monarch of Iceland.
Þingvellir tells stories of geographical and political struggles, compromises and ongoing evolution. Þingvellir was accepted on the UNESCO World Heritage list for its cultural values in 2004.
